PSHCE Intent at Alderton Junior School

PSHCE and RSE (Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economics Education and Relationships and Sex Education) is central to all aspects of pupil learning at The Alderton Junior School, both in the classroom and beyond. It is taught as a weekly timetabled lesson and through weekly assemblies. We also study areas in greater depth such as Black History Month and Anti-Bullying Week.

Curriculum Summary

We use a two-year spiral approach to PSHCE and RSE, using the PSHCE Cambridge Scheme and the Government-recommended Medway Scheme. All year groups study the same topics during the year, but each topic is revisited at a deeper level as the children move further up the school. This means that by the time the children leave at Year 6, the essential skills and attributes that young people need to manage their lives both now, and in the future, are embedded.

British Values are taught explicitly within PSHCE as well as during class discussions and through assemblies. These values are modelled throughout the year by all members of staff and as well as through our democratic school council. 

We have an effective and enthusiastic School Council who are key to ensuring pupil voice is heard throughout the school as well as newly appointed Peer Mediators to support children manage conflict within the playground.

RSE

Relationships and Sex Education is now a compulsory part of the National Curriculum (September 2020) and The Alderton Junior School encourages parental discussion regarding the new changes. Parental consultations will take place on a yearly basis in Years 5 and 6 regarding this area of the curriculum to ensure we are meeting the needs of all children on their journey through the school.
