Geography Intent at Alderton Junior School

At Alderton Junior School, we have a cross-curricular approach, with most subjects linked to each term’s History and Geography learning.

The aim of the geography curriculum at Alderton is to ignite children’s curiosity and intrigue in the world around them and its people. We start each half-term with a ‘Wow Event’, where children take part in a memorable, first-hand experience to immerse them in the topic. Through a well-planned geography curriculum we aim to develop geographical knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas.

Geographical enquiry helps children build an understanding of the world and promotes questioning and exploration. The local area is utilised to provide opportunities for learning outside the classroom and fieldwork gives first hand experiences, which enhance children’s understanding and gives them the opportunity to practise practical geographical skills in a meaningful way.

A clear skills and knowledge progression (see below) ensures that prior learning is built on year-by-year to maximise learning for all children. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes and the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographers at Alderton will develop the ability to apply questioning skills to geographical enquiry and to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in good knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment.

It is our aim that  through investigation of a range of places - both in Britain and abroad - our children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures, recognise the importance of sustainable development for the future of mankind and become enthused and excited about the planet they live on.
